Well...this is painful so I'm just gonna throw it out there. And then I don't really want to talk about it. Its my business. I'm not done with school this quarter I still have at least 4 classes left. There. Oh well. I was hella depressed about it, but Lauri and I went for a hike today and then she took me to a nice sushi dinner and bought me a book called The Zombie Survival Guide. That girl is just fucking awesome.
Yesterday we hung out at my house and barbaqued some burgers. It was fun and it was the first swim of the year. We got sunburned. Today on our hike we got rained on. I'll never understand CA weather.
Now I'd like the discuss the unexplored subtext of Aquateen Hungerforce. I can't watch it on TV anymore so I'm going to overanalyze it. Alex ought to love this.
The thing that first strikes one about Aquateen, beside the fact that they are talking food products, is that they are a Super Hero team that doesn't fight crime, or do anything really. It's this important fact that leads us to the implied message that the creators are trying to get the audience to see. Aquateen represent the lost hopes of a generation. Its interesting to note that in the first seasons of the show the trio did fight crime of sorts, but no longer. Seeing the pointless nature of thier actions, the Aquateen have become sedentary, accepting a life of watching TV and scraping out a living in a mediocre New Jersey neighborhood. Like the generation of youth who grew up worshipping Movie Stars and Rock gods beleiving they would become rich and famous only to find themselves disappointed and completely unprepared to live in world where everyone was just as qualified as they were for just about anything. You see, as superheros go the Aquateen are nothing special. They only real super powers they posses are Frylock's eye lightning. They aren't even particulary smart. Compare Aquateen to the previous generation of cartoon super heros. Take, for an example, the Superfriends. The Superfriends were a formidable fighting crew who could do some real damage both individually and collectively to the world of crime. The Sperfriends operating in the sixties when a generation of youth was fighting the establishment. As the Vietnam war came to an end there was a hope that a lesson had been learned, that future generations would live in a more enlightened age. The current generation wishes to live in this enlightened age. We wish to not have to fight old fights. Aquateen shouldn't have to worry about fighting the Lex Luthors of the world, that fight has already been fought so why shouldn't a trio of regular guys be able to fight crime with more of a focus on nuance than brute force. However, what the Aquateen found, much as our generation has found, is that no lessons have been learned, the Lex Luthors are still out there, and having been prepared for a more peaceful time, we and they are wholly unprepared and overwhelmed. Its no wonder that the Aquateen quickly became jaded, after all whats the point of fighting crime if your not making any difference at all. Better to live for your own pleasure and just let things cycle naturally as they are bound to do.
